2020 WNHGA Corena Green Classic for Junior Girls

The 30th Annual WNHGA Corena Green Classic for Junior Girls, held on Monday, August 3rd, 2020 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Oakdale, was able to take place albeit with plenty of precautions. As a result of the evolving situation with COVID -19, and following state requirements, WNHGA was required to make significant changes in the tournament format by eliminating the traditional shotgun start and assigning tee times. Despite these encumbrances the turnout was remarkable, and the 91 competitors were treated to a theme of Pretty in Pink, with pink hair bows, jeweled mini tote bags, golf balls and matching golf towels. The girls had their pictures taken out in the course with a beautiful backdrop of Oakdale CC Hole #2 and how cute they all were dressed in a smorgasbord of pink!

Unfortunately, WNHGA could conclude the event with the annual luncheon and awards ceremony due to the social distancing and food service guidelines, but the girls and parents did not let that dampen their enthusiasm in the slightest. Donning masks of every color and design these young ladies were excited to play and play they did. There were some great scores, as you can see by the winners’ list. Best of all were the friendships rekindled and the new ones formed. It was heartwarming to see all the kindness, respect and smiles among the girls, something no mask could ever hide.

It goes without saying but this tournament would not be possible without the hard work of our 39 member-clubs. These clubs work all year to raise money to sponsor this event. And let’s not forget the individual members who volunteer their time to be markers, as well as all the Oakdale G&CC volunteers that made the tournament run so smoothly under these extraordinary and uncertain times.

In addition to $8,775 in post-high school merchandise certificates, the winners received Corena Green printed backpack and winner’s plaques which were sent to each award recipient. Congratulations to each and every one of our winners. Our overall champion, Borina Sutikto, sponsored by The Villages CC, is a sixteen-year-old who will continue to attend high school next year. We wish her, as well as all the girls, every success in their golf games and in life.

Next year’s “31st” tournament is scheduled for Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove. Entry forms will be mailed to this year’s competitors some time in spring of 2021. The forms will also be available on our website: www.WNHGA.com To all who took a leap of faith and participated this year—thank you for keeping this tournament so special! We look forward to seeing many you again next year.
